A Forest Lodge studio with connection at its core.

There’s a rhythm to The Tramsheds at Forest Lodge - a place where history and modern life seamlessly intersect. Once home to Sydney’s tram network, the heritage-listed site now thrives as a hub for food, culture, and community. With the arrival of Athletica Pilates, movement becomes part of that mix, bringing a new energy to this already dynamic space.

For Sonia Wong, founder of Athletica Pilates, the decision to open a studio here wasn’t just about expansion—it was about connection. A proud Annandale local with deep ties to the Inner West, she saw The Tramsheds as an opportunity to create something that served her surrounding neighbourhoods.

“There’s a wonderful sense of community in Forest Lodge,” she says. “The Tramsheds is more than just a space—it’s a hub where locals meet, eat, and now train. We feel lucky to be part of that ecosystem.”

Built in 1904 as the Rozelle Tramway Depot, The Tramsheds retains much of its original character, even as it’s been reimagined. Wong and her husband, both with design backgrounds, worked closely with an architect and tradespeople to shape a studio that appears right at home in this unique setting.

“We embraced the industrial and utilitarian style while incorporating our brand identity,” Wong explains. “The space reflects our values—strong, purposeful, and refined.”

The studio’s minimalist aesthetic, elegant finishes, and carefully chosen colours and textures create an inviting yet high-performance environment. Wong wanted the space to feel premium, but also open and calming—somewhere that encourages movement and focus.

“Natural light and high ceilings make the studio feel open and airy, improving overall comfort and instilling a sense of calm,” she says. “We were conscious of creating a spacious, uncluttered environment, allowing clients to move freely, whether in a private session or a group class. We like to think it’s the kind of place Joseph Pilates himself, founder of Pilates, would have loved to teach in.”

While the setting is undoubtedly special, it’s the method that defines Athletica Pilates. Since launching in 2018, Wong has worked to challenge traditional perceptions of Pilates, creating a practice that is as athletic as it is precise. Designed for both men and women, the studio’s method is rooted in strength, control, and progression, with every instructor trained to ensure a consistent, high-energy experience.

“Our goal was to help people push their strength and fitness beyond what they thought possible,” Wong explains. “We’re about more than just flexibility—we focus on strength, form, and performance, making Pilates both empowering and effective.”

With its doors now open, Athletica Pilates is settling into its new home in The Tramsheds, ready to become a part of the local lifestyle. Wong sees the studio as part of a broader movement toward wellness in Sydney’s Inner West, encouraging locals to challenge themselves, build strength, and deepen their connection to the vibrant community around them.
