69-77 King Street
Newtown

An extraordinary piece of Sydney history occupying a landmark position on King Street, the Trocadero is one of Newtown’s most significant buildings - a rare late-Victorian commercial complex of impressive scale. Originally opened in 1889 and purpose-built as a roller-skating rink, it was known as the largest and most elegant rink in Australia, combining a skating hall with shops, billiards, club rooms, baths, hairdressing salons, cafés and entertainment spaces. The King Street frontage is a rare Sydney example of Victorian Flemish commercial architecture with free-style Gothic detailing. While the former skating rink has previously been sensitively adapted for commercial use, the upper levels have not been formally used since 1995 and retain much of their original room configuration and architectural fabric. An opportunity to participate in the next chapter of one of King Street’s defining landmarks in a building of genuine rarity, presence and immense adaptive re-use potential.
